Universities are higher education institutions that holds an important and respected place in society. They are at the core of social development. Universities create, protect and spread knowledge for the social and economic well-being of communities, both locally and globally. As a matter of fact, universities within the rapidly developing higher education system have an important place in the revitalization of the local economies due to the stimulus effects they provide with the personnel they employ and with other related sectors. The aim of this study is to evaluate the contributions of the universities, which are rapidly increasing in numbers and there are now at least one university in all the cities of the country, to the socio-economic and cultural structure of the established societies in the context of polarization theory and the case of Munzur University. The research is designed in a scanning model. The results of the study were obtained by face to face interviews conducted by students who were studying at Munzur University in the academic year of 2016-2017 and 725 students who were interviewed are determined by random selection method. According to research findings; the difference between the student expenditures of the faculty students and the vocational college students was significant. In the same way, the difference between student expenditures is significant compared to the students studying at the vocational colleges / programs in the provinces with those studying in the vocational colleges in the city center. On the other hand, the difference between the student spending and the gender variables was not significant. On average, student spending as a whole is 410 TL per month. In this case, compared to the multiplier coefficient, the contribution to the economy of the province is not at a high level. In terms of expenditure trends, students were found to spend the most food and, at a minimum, spend on cultural and social activities. They also expressed the opinion that the city is inadequate in terms of social opportunities and is very expensive to live in general. In the study, it was concluded that the main reasons for the low contribution of student expenditures to the province economy is the socio economic background of the students. They are mostly from families with lower income groups and from the backward regions in terms of social and economic development.
